Zhi Yang, BioVeda China Fund, Founder, Chairman and Managing Partner Close Window

Dr. Yang has over twenty years of experience in the Life Sciences Industry in China and the U.S. as a venture capital investor, senior management executive, entrepreneur and scientific inventor. As a venture capitalist, in 2005 Dr. Yang formed BioVeda China Fund, which is the first international Life Science venture capital firm in China. Dr. Yang has raised capital from prominent Asian, European and U.S. international institutional, corporate and financial blue chip investors for his private venture growth stage Funds. Dr. Yang has developed a highly successful and diversified portfolio of venture growth stage companies in the biopharmaceuticals, medical technology, healthcare services and industrial biotech sectors that include Cathay Industrial Biotech, Ltd., NOD Pharmaceuticals, Ealong Biotech, CITIC Pharmaceuticals, and Stateview (Aildenafil). Prior to founding BioVeda China Fund, Dr. Yang was Co-Founder and General Partner of BioVeda Capital, a venture capital firm that invested in Asia and U.S. for which he created a successful portfolio with top performance compared with peers and bench mark. Among twelve investee companies, there are six exits (4 IPOs and 2 acquisitions).

As a senior management executive, Dr. Yang was former Executive Vice President of business development of Sinogen International Ltd., which was created by H&Q Asia Pacific, as a vehicle to acquire biotech and pharmaceutical companies in China, and the vehicle for NASDAQ IPO. He spearheaded an M&A group and acquired Shangdong Kexin Biotech, Beijing Hua-er-dun Vaccine Co. and Egen Corp., and appointed as VP of sales and marketing in charge of over 150 sales people in Shanghai. Prior to Sinogen, Dr. Yang held senior scientific and management positions in both biotech and pharmaceutical companies, including Sinogen, Incyte Pharmaceuticals, Prolinx, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, and Systemix. As an entrepreneur, Dr. Yang started and co-founded biotech businesses in both China and the U.S. including: Trans-Pacific Recombinant Technology (exit), BioChain Institute (exit), Crimson Pharmaceuticals, Genex BioScience, Biotech Core (exit), Sciprogene, and ScinoScience Partners.

Dr. Yang received his Masters and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Harvard University. Dr. Yang was ranked #1 among all graduate students in the class of 1982 of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences; and among the first group of 21 students, selected from several thousand, to study in the U.S. in 1982 with the CUSBEA (China-U.S. Biological Science Education Association) program. Dr. Yang is the principal inventor of more than 10 U.S. and international patents, and prior to joining industry, was a Senior Associate Fellow and faculty member at Rockefeller University. Dr. Yang is an Advisor to the China Health & Medical Development Foundation under the Ministry of Health (Beijing, China).
